Beaverton’s Choice Spotlight – Beyond the Puzzle

Rubik’s Cubes are filled with hours of fun. Moving the colorful tiles to form the perfect rainbow cube can be exhilarating. But, why stop there? Instructional Technology Teacher, Suzanne Peerenboom had her Five Oaks Middle School students go beyond the puzzle to plan and build their own mosaic designs.

They even worked together to build big mosaic pictures of Nelson Mandela and the Mona Lisa. As interest in the cube project grew, unfortunately the supply did not. That is when Suzanne turned to BEF’s crowd funding website, Beaverton’s Choice.

“Our goal with Beaverton’s Choice was to purchase 100 Rubik’s Cubes to be used by all grade levels for collaboration, design, and engineering projects,” explained Suzanne. “We exceeded our goal, raising enough to purchase 144 cubes!”

With excitement in tact and resources in place Suzanne’s students came into the library on a daily basis to practice solving the cubes. Students began building bigger and better mosaics and even competed with their friends for fastest builds.

In a few simple steps Suzanne expanded her promising puzzle project to reach students in all grades, encouraging collaborations and fun with engineering. You can support projects like this throughout the year by donating now to the Beaverton Education Foundation and becoming a sustaining donor!
