Our teachers are transitioning nearly every aspect of their work into a new online model. One thing that will never change though is the impact teachers make in our kids’ lives. While critical for student success, these one-on-one relationships provide a much-needed bright spot for our educators during distance learning.
Kate Kelley and Sara de la Paz Garza recently shared their story of connection made possible by a BEF-funded outreach program, Camp Connect. Angelina had only been in kindergarten at Vose Elementary a few weeks before schools closed due to COVID 19. Thrown into online school, Angelina lost touch with her teachers. Staff made repeated attempts to reach out to Angelina’s family, but they were unsuccessful and worried.
Kate was finally able to connect through the family’s emergency contacts. Angelina’s family knew nothing about the upcoming school year and had many needs. Thanks to resources available through Camp Connect, Kate and Sara were able to build a strong relationship with Angelina’s mom, Susana, and teach her technology basics so she could help Angelina with learning at home.
The Camp Connect program provided the family with community resources and personalized support. Thanks to Kate and Sara’s dedication, Angelina’s family is engaged in learning, connected to the Vose staff, and empowered to utilize community resources. Outreach efforts not only introduced the family to tech support for Angelina, but also food and clothing resources for the entire family.
Angelina is currently thriving in school and Kate and Sara are beyond grateful for their connection. “The Camp Connect outreach we have done to Vose families is an experience I will hold near and dear to my heart forever,” Kate explained, adding, “Connecting with the families and bringing them joy and hope during this difficult time has helped me keep going each day.”This is just one of many incredible stories that has come from Camp Connect outreach.
